How to Choose the Right Water Tank for Your Project in Nigeria
The right tank depends on four things: what you’re storing, how much of it, where the tank will sit, and how long you need it to last. Get those four right and the product choice becomes straightforward. This guide walks you through each decision in order.
THE DECISION FRAMEWORK
Four Questions That Determine the Right Tank
|
1 |
What are you storing? Potable water, process water, rainwater, chemicals, fuel, or wastewater — the stored fluid determines which tank materials are safe and appropriate. A standard GRP panel tank suitable for water is not the right specification for sulphuric acid. |
|
2 |
How much capacity do you need? Capacity is calculated from daily demand plus reserve. For water storage: daily consumption × days of reserve required = minimum tank capacity. For industrial storage: process volume × batch frequency × safety margin. See our FRP Tank Capacity Guide for worked examples. |
|
3 |
Where will the tank be installed? Overhead (rooftop or elevated frame), ground-level, or below-ground? Indoor or outdoor? Access-restricted location or open site? The installation location determines which tank construction type is practical. |
|
4 |
How long does it need to last? A 10-year temporary facility has different economics from a 40-year permanent installation. Shorter life requirements may favour lower-cost steel or HDPE. Longer life requirements almost always favour FRP/GRP when total cost of ownership is calculated. |
MATERIAL DECISION TREE
From Your Answers to the Right Material — Decision Tree
|
POTABLE WATER? |
If the stored fluid is potable water: FRP/GRP with food-grade resin (NSF-61), Braithwaite galvanised steel, or food-grade HDPE. Concrete is not recommended for potable water without a full epoxy lining and regular inspection. |
|
CHEMICAL STORAGE? |
If the stored fluid is a chemical, acid, alkali, or hydrocarbon: FRP/GRP with the resin system matched to the specific fluid. No other material option is broadly suitable for aggressive chemical service. |
|
LARGE VOLUME (100,000L+)? |
For large volume: FRP/GRP sectional or filament-wound. Concrete for very large permanent cisterns. HDPE is not practical above ~50,000L. |
|
BUDGET CONSTRAINED / SHORT LIFE? |
Where upfront cost is the binding constraint and the asset life is under 20 years: Braithwaite steel or HDPE depending on the application. Factoring in maintenance costs over 20 years typically reverses this calculation. |

FAQ
Water Tank Buyers in Nigeria — Common Questions
I don't know what size tank I need — can you help me calculate?
A: Yes — contact Karoch Engineering with your daily consumption estimate, number of building occupants, and required reserve period (typically 2–5 days). We will calculate the required capacity and recommend the appropriate product configuration.
Can I install a tank without an engineer?
A: For tanks below 10,000 litres installed at ground level, a basic civil base and a competent handyman are often sufficient. For rooftop installations above 5,000 litres, tanks above 100,000 litres, or any installation on a structure that has not been assessed, a structural engineer’s sign-off is strongly recommended.
What is the most common mistake when buying a water tank in Nigeria?
A: Buying for upfront price rather than application suitability. The single most common scenario is a galvanised steel or Braithwaite tank installed in a coastal or chemically aggressive environment, which corrodes well ahead of schedule and requires costly replacement. Specifying the right material for the environment from day one avoids this entirely.
