Potable water, process water, rainwater, chemicals, fuel, or wastewater — the stored fluid determines which tank materials are safe and appropriate. A standard GRP panel tank suitable for water is not the right specification for sulphuric acid.

How much capacity do you need?

Where will the tank be installed?

Overhead (rooftop or elevated frame), ground-level, or below-ground? Indoor or outdoor? Access-restricted location or open site? The installation location determines which tank construction type is practical.

How long does it need to last?

A 10-year temporary facility has different economics from a 40-year permanent installation. Shorter life requirements may favour lower-cost steel or HDPE. Longer life requirements almost always favour FRP/GRP when total cost of ownership is calculated.

If the stored fluid is potable water: FRP/GRP with food-grade resin (NSF-61), Braithwaite galvanised steel, or food-grade HDPE. Concrete is not recommended for potable water without a full epoxy lining and regular inspection.

CHEMICAL STORAGE?

If the stored fluid is a chemical, acid, alkali, or hydrocarbon: FRP/GRP with the resin system matched to the specific fluid. No other material option is broadly suitable for aggressive chemical service.

LARGE VOLUME (100,000L+)?

For large volume: FRP/GRP sectional or filament-wound. Concrete for very large permanent cisterns. HDPE is not practical above ~50,000L.

BUDGET CONSTRAINED / SHORT LIFE?

Where upfront cost is the binding constraint and the asset life is under 20 years: Braithwaite steel or HDPE depending on the application. Factoring in maintenance costs over 20 years typically reverses this calculation.
